RedDimmer vs Lunar
Choosing between RedDimmer and Lunar? Start with what you want to change: the color and apparent brightness of the screen, or the controls inside your external monitor. These apps have different priorities.
Choose RedDimmer for free evening warmth, pure-red color and software dimming. Choose Lunar for compatible external-monitor hardware controls and its monitor automation options. RedDimmer does not replace DDC brightness, monitor input or volume controls.

Make the evening image darker and warmer
RedDimmer lets you choose a software brightness level independently from the screen's warmth. Its pure-red setting is an option for a very different evening appearance, and editable presets let you return to a combination quickly. Local fixed-time or sunset schedules can apply the settings you choose. For a laptop-and-monitor setup, individual-display controls let you configure RedDimmer's adjustments separately.

Lunar documents DDC control of compatible monitors, including hardware brightness and input switching. Its manual monitor controls are free; automation features such as Sync, Sensor and Clock modes are described as Pro features. It also offers dimming below a display's normal minimum. If your problem is reaching around a monitor to press its buttons or keeping hardware brightness in step across a desk, those are good reasons to consider Lunar.
For a MacBook connected to a bright monitor
Decide whether the monitor's own brightness is too high or whether you mainly want a softer color and image in the evening. Hardware control and software dimming solve related but different problems. RedDimmer leaves the physical brightness control to you and gives you a saved warmth-and-dimming routine. Check your monitor and connection against the other app's documentation before expecting hardware commands to work; the connection is part of the setup.
Compare the appearance on your own display, keep text readable, and return to normal color for color-sensitive work. Our linked research explanations separate screen preferences from health claims.
Questions before you choose
Can RedDimmer replace Lunar for external monitors?
For warmth and software dimming, RedDimmer may cover your routine. It does not replace Lunar's monitor hardware controls, input switching or sensor-based automation.
Does Lunar dim below the minimum brightness?
Yes. Lunar documents Sub-zero Dimming. RedDimmer also offers software dimming, with a slider down to 10%; those software values are not equivalent to measured display light output.
Which should I choose for DDC brightness control?
Lunar is the relevant choice between these two for DDC on a compatible monitor and connection. RedDimmer's current app leaves hardware brightness under your control.
